Vishakhapatnam has a wealthy cultural previous, because it was underneath the occupation of a number of kingdoms, which imprinted generations of heritage onto the area. Visakhapatnam was part of the Kalinga empire, and within the seventh century, it was conquered by the Jap Chalukyas. Subsequently, it was dominated by the Reddy Rajas of Kondaveedu, the Gajapathis of Odisha, the Nawabs of Golkonda, and the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, through an appointed subedar. Later, the French took over after which the British colonisers occupied it.
