4 individuals are suspected to have drowned at Keri (Querim) seaside in North Goa on Sunday, stated Goa police. Two our bodies have been recovered, together with that of a teenage woman and a person in his 20s, whereas a search and rescue operation has been initiated to find the opposite two lacking individuals.

Police stated prima facie, it seems that the victims have been taking selfies on the rocky space on the seaside after they have been allegedly hit by a sudden wave.

In response to the police, the victims have been half of a bigger group of over 20 individuals, who had travelled from Candolim to Keri seaside. Police stated within the night, the group was headed in direction of Arambol candy lake from Keri seaside when 4 individuals retreated from the group and went in direction of the rocky space to click on photos.

“It’s suspected that they have been hit by a wave and knocked over into the ocean,” stated a police officer.

“Two our bodies have been recovered thus far, and a rescue operation to find two lacking individuals has been initiated. The id of the deceased individuals is being ascertained,” stated Nidhin Valsan, SP North Goa.

Police stated that it was not sure if the victims have been locals or vacationers, including that the circumstances resulting in the drowning have been a part of the investigation. Inquest proceedings beneath part 174 of CrPC have been initiated, stated police.

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said that he had sought a report from the police concerning the incident, including that it could be untimely to touch upon the incident until a report was acquired.

In response to a latest report by Drishti Marine, the state government-appointed lifeguard company, reported that seashores in North Goa recorded the best variety of rescues by lifesavers, with 167 rescue operations being performed in waters off Calangute seaside adopted by 113 rescues at Baga and 43 rescue operations at Arambol seaside between January 2022 and February 2023. In South Goa, Palolem had the utmost rescues with 25 rescue operations adopted by 18 rescues at Colva and 6 at Benaulim.

In the meantime, the Goa Congress unit demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident, calling for an audit of manpower and gear engaged for seaside security by the contractors.

“The drowning incident has as soon as once more uncovered that the seaside security contract is a rip-off of the vacationer division. The incident proves that the contractors haven’t deployed sufficient lifeguards on the seashores. Will the tourism minister take duty and resign? Will the chief minister cancel his birthday celebrations as a mark of respect to the victims and their households?” stated Amarnath Panjikar, Congress media cell chairman.
